What I want my brand to be and why?

It’s the beginning of my second year as a part of the Sports Journalism course at USW, While i learnt a lot in my first year despite it being cut short by coronavirus and facing a few challenges along the way. It’s now time for me to showcase what I want my personal brand to be and why I want it to be that way. Not only this time but I will always be further developing my brand through social media and just in general striving to be a better version of myself day by day.

What are my aims?

Push yourself, because no one else is going to do it for you

Strive to be the best version of myself everyday, go out of my comfort zone and work hard

Sometimes later becomes never, do it now, don’t say i’ll do it tomorrow or another day be a doer not a don’ter

The harder you work for something the greater you’ll feel when you achieve it, wake up with determination then go to bed with satisfaction

Above is my little manifesto and although it’s just a few inspirational quotes you might see as cliche on a gym wall or on a bedroom poster however these quotes have a purpose and meaning to me. I feel like these are the fundamental key words that’ll help me strive to fur fill my potential to the best of my ability.

I haven’t necessarily had to work for lots of things in my life but through experience of my gym goals and football goals and exams I know good things don’t come to people who don’t work for them. The best things in life are the things which require the most work and the main message I want people to see from my manifesto is that i’m ready to work hard.

I plan this year to go out of my comfort zone and be open to learning new skills that will further develop my career as a Sports Journalist. Be as consistent as possible with my work and to complete work to a good standard, most importantly to space out my time as well as possible because this is something I’ve previously struggled with. Regularly producing content and doing my best to get it out to as many people as possible.

Doing all the things listed above will no doubt help to the promotion of my brand and allow me to become a good a Journalist as I possibly can be.

“I was sleeping on friends floors and couches early on in my career” Jacque Oatley on her journey to becoming the established broadcaster she is today.

Jacque Oatley football and darts presenter for ITV and best know for being the first female commentator for BBC’s match of the day spoke earlier today on the royal television society with former cricketer Isa Guha, BBC sport supremo Barbara Slater, top indy head honcho Mark Cole and former Wolves goalkeeper Matt Murray on how to kick off a career in sports broadcasting.

Jacque gave an insight into how she became the first female to break into football commentary for match of the day by taking every opportunity that came her way. After rupturing her knee early on in her sporting career and being told she’d never play again it was clear to see her love for sport wouldn’t just end there with her obsessive love for football leading her into her next career aspiration of being a Sports Broadcaster.

“I started completely from the beginning and learnt everything from the bottom up”

Starting a second university degree at the age of 27 and going straight into work experience doing small podcasts for non league football with score updates.

“back then the only way you could get score updates was by phoning the clubs themselves which was exciting in its own way”

After she’d built up enough experience in this field she began sofa surfing her friends couches whilst taking every opportunity that came her way, a significant one being her first game she commentated over which was given to her very last minute due to a cancellation of a different game and required research on players names at the very last minute.

“I was thrown into the deep end but afterwards i thought if i can get through that i can do anything”

Jacques most notable point that came across by the end of the discussion is that you have to break out of your comfort zone and take every opportunity that comes your way.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
